North Korea Cuts Ties with South

Today's top story... Communist North Korea says it's ending all political and military deals with South Korea.

STORY:
South Korea expressed their regret over North Korea's decision to end all political and military ties with Seoul.

[Kim Ho-Nyeon, S. Korean Unification Ministry]:
"We express deep regret. Agreements between North and South Korea can be modified when both parties agree. They cannot be aborted by North Korea's unilateral claim.

Their decision comes after Seoul stopped sending aid to its destitute neighbor. But Seoul is urging them to engage in some form of dialogue.

[Kim Ho-Nyeon, S. Korean Unification Ministry]:
"North Korea should recognize sincerely that it is not desirable for the peace of the world, as well as the Korean peninsula and Northeast Asia, to build up and expand tension between the two Koreas. We urge North Korea to agree on dialogue and cooperate with us."

Relations between the two Koreas has been fraught.

Neighboring country Japan has urged both sides to remain calm.

[Jun Matsumoto, Japanese Vice Cabinet Secretary]:
"I would like to refrain from giving blow-by-blow comments on North and South Korean relationships. However, the fact remains that the region's peace and stability is paramount and it is of utmost importance that this issue is dealt with a level head."

Almost nine years ago a détente was reached and leaders of the two states met for the first time.

Families were reunited and good relations were established.

But in 2002 North Korean ships fired on a South Korean vessel, killing six and Pyongyang is increasingly critical of the South.

Analysts say North Korea wants to attract the attention of the United States and they have already hinted towards achieving a friendly relationship with Obama's government.
