Giant Jumping Spider Eating a Blow-fly 蝿を捕食するオオハエトリ成体♀

Adult female (11mm in body length) of the giant jumping spider (Marpissa milleri, family Salticidae) feeding on a blowfly. She is my captive pet now. Early-April, 2009 in Japan.

飼育中のオオハエトリ♀成体の食事光景です。食事中は容器の蓋を開けても逃げません。蝿（クロバエ？）を狩る瞬間は見逃しましたけど、食べ終わるまで見届けました。ときど­き獲物を持ち替えて噛む位置を変えます。顔を正面からマクロレンズで覗くと鋭い毒牙の動きが見えます。実際はじっとして吸汁する時間が長いのですが、ただでさえ長尺の動画­なので、動きの無い退屈なシーンは編集で大幅にカットしてあります。食後は糸※に絡まった死骸を下に落とそうと数回試みるも失敗し、諦めたように見えます。捕獲当初はぺし­ゃんこだった腹部が食後は心なしか満腹になったようです。

※ハエトリグモは狩り用の網を作らないが、常に「しおり糸」を引き回して歩くので容器内は糸が張り巡らされる。

《追記》このクモは長いこと亜成体だと思い込んでいたのですけど、既に成熟した成体♀であることが後に判明したので訂正します。

they were captured on diff days & locations.

looks like the spider never tries to hunt down the prey which is larger than herself.

the sharp claw-like things in the mouth are fangs (not tongue) which inject venom and digestive saliva into the prey.

and jumping spiders have eight eyes.

they have excellent vision.
