Meet the performers in Paul Whiteman's orchestra during the filming of the movie: King of Jazz(1930). There are plenty talented players in this band including Eddie Lang, Joe Venuti, Roy Bargy, Willie Hall and Mike Pingitore.

  • In the early 20's when the "King of Jazz" expression first appeared , the term "jazz" was liberally used even by some not particularly hot dance bands. I suspect it was a bit of PR hype by his management. I would also be surprised if Benny Goodman REALLY thought that the title " King of Swing " , though good for business, was accurate.

  • @Kinemacolour - The only "controversy" I can think of is that he called himself "King of Jazz," (hence the title of this movie), but his orchestra did not for the most part play jazz. He was more like a forerunner to the Big Band era. There's nothing wrong with his music, but since it's not jazz as it was known at that time some people still object to him using that title.

  • Joe Venuti and Eddie Lang are outstanding. Mike Pingitore really ties it all together at the end.

  • I swear, Venuti and Lang, combined, were one of the most magical things to happen to music... not just American music, or 20th century music, but ALL MUSIC!!!

  • @gwahir11, "The King Of Jazz" was released on video cassette in the 1980's. You can still find those videotapes on Amazon.com. As far as I know, it has not been released on DVD.

  • @bobbobato, it sounds like Hazlett is playing "Rockabye Baby" as an obbligato, while Roy Bargy plays "Nola."

  • Does anyone know whats the name of the tune being played by Chester Hazlett, at 2:30? I've been looking for it but can't remember the title.

  • @starlost1957 Where to begin... well, first of all, his music, by many definitions, wasn't really jazz, because most of it wasn't improvised. And yet he was known as 'the King of Jazz'. Second, he never hired any black musicians -though he did collaborate with them- even though Jazz is known as a 'black' genre. Third, during the 1920s, he was extremely popular as a Jazz Band, so the 'real' Jazz musicians were less successful. I can't go on; Youtube only allows 500 character posts!

  • @starlost1957 Well, the Glory years besides the late eighteenth century, when Mozart lived :)

  • @rialtobaby Anyone who is talented in Jazz or Blues can join in as the "Rainbow" Band
