This is a short video of the 2010 annual tornado siren test at Texas Tech University. The system is comprised of 6 sirens, both electronic and electromechanical. Sirens you will hear in the video are a STH-10 [loudest] and two Whelen 2902/OA2 sirens. You will note that the electronic sirens are activated in "Attack." It was very windy, so forgive the wind noise.

Also, sorry for no close-ups of the STH-10, as it is mounted below the facade of the building it's on. I was also afraid of the wind blowing into the mic, and distorting the sound further.

TTU also has a Model 5, Model 2 and other unknown siren on campus. I believe it is a Sentry.

  • Good sounding STH i thought TTU Replaced all their electromechanicals with whelen?

  • @rhett443 Texas Tech added two Whelen 2902's to the system this past fall. They have a Model 2, 5, STH-10 and [I think] Sentry as well.

  • isn't it true that all the other sirens off the campus of Texas Tech haven't been used since like 1992 and have been turned off?

  • I believe the old system was shut off well before the 1990's. It wasn't operational during the 1970 tornado, I don't believe. They used to have a system of 12 Thunderbolts, 5 are remaining. They are indeed just sitting silently atop their poles, preserved by the arid climate.

  • the 2 whelens in the background are actually sounding the wail tone, for whelens the "attack" tone is actually a fast wail but the wail mode is like the attack mode on a normal siren like a modulator.

  • Indeed you are right. I use Attack as a general term for any siren doing the up/down wavering tone. Thanks for the info!

  • ii LiiVE iiN LBK TX aka: DAHH "806"

  • i am so pissed. i went to texas tech to hear the test of the whelen 2902 today at 2:00. but it did not go off =[ but at least you could here the sth-10 and model 5. and they went off for 3 minuts =]

  • I thought that was a 2001 until i read the description.

  • that's stupid that they don't even use them for tornadoes anymore. even if there was a rare attack on the US they would'nt probably even use them. they probably have all the same controllers going into em and all you have to do is probably press a button and they'll go off but unused. probably don't work anymore if they were to be set off again. wonder why they've been unused for the past 20-40 years?

  • I think that slight change in wind up rate on the STH-10 is what gives away that it is a single-phase STH-10B, but can anyone confirm that?
