If the yellow timer at the bottom left reaches 00:00, it turns red and nothing happens immediately. If you solve the puzzle when the timer is red, the door still opens but you are denied the next level unless you want to use a token.
Another thing is that you can receive a hint in the help screen for the current level if you press Start when the timer is red.

Ah, I was wondering what the tokens are for, since you seem to have unlimited retries of the current level.

Tokens can be used to clear the level if time elapsed, or you can use it to reset to the time before you used the push.
