This video demonstrates a classic example of deist delusion. The ABC new item is a piece of human interest fluff which ventures into the realm of fantasy tabloid aka "Elvis Abducted By Aliens" style. I have mirrored this as the 'person' posting it originally, revkiethbar, is a deist censorship abuser, who allowed open comments, until I posted numerous critical comments about deist irrationality in general. At this point he deleted my posts and closed comment posting on that video. Open discussion until criticism embarrasses you, huh rev?

The item claims to report on the "SCIENCE, of speaking in tongues". It covers a study performed by a radiologist Andrew Newberg, who coined the term Nurotheology to describe such studies which examine to the behavior of the brain in relation to religious experience. With this kind of subject matter being presented as scientific fodder, it behooves us to note the religious sympathies of the researcher in question and take careful note of the scientific protocols being exercised, to ensure they are of the standard required to prevent any chance of a biased result.

While science is usually held accountable by a ruthless peer review process, the religious community or those vulnerable to persuasion are barely aware of the diligent process which must be employed to ensure intellectual integrity. This study (however invalidated it may be in conventional scientific circles), is a prime example of borrowing from the credibility of scientific authority, while ignoring the critique of the wider academic establishment. Creationists instead present their fabrications and distortions directly to the lay community, because the claims on offer need only to impress those who wish to accept them at face value, but lack the educational background to find errors.

I have a more detailed critique at my blog: http://wp.me/stTkc-145

  • @Skepticoz: I was being half tongue-in-cheek. I don't have any hard evidence that these subjects aren't intentionally "making stuff up." However, I imagine that the speaking in tongues phenomenon is a bit like the stage hypnosis henomenon. Going into a state of trance isn't that difficult. I would imagine that some people just make sounds to fit in, but with the rythmic utterences and swaying, I think getting getting a mild buzz and dissociating wouldn't be unlikely.

  • @rustichan ¨I was being half tongue-in-cheek.¨ Or is that speaking in half tongues while turning the other cheek? LOL.

¨I don't have any hard evidence that these subjects aren't intentionally "making stuff up."¨

Do we really need any? Point of fact is, that there´s no good reason to be convinced otherwise and every reason to suspect so. Like any meme with a desperate desire to be copied, itś transmitted by the victims it parasites, using ulterior motives (Think immortal salvation).

  • I have to say, speaking in tongues seems to be a rather potent way to quickly throw one into a rather intense altered state. It brings strong positive feelings, probably induces a surge of dopamine. I mean, if it's not addictive, I'm all for evangelical christian crack!

  • @rustichan ¨I have to say, speaking in tongues seems to be a rather potent way to quickly throw one into a rather intense altered state.¨

I have to wonder what the cause of that altered state actually is. If you are going merely by appearances, I´d have to suggest it seems much more like a put on show to induce the appearance of spontaneity as if it were intended pretense that something involuntary (an external entity), taking over and taking control. Itś seems affected and feigned.

  • @Onemillionmoney When im depressed i drink whiskey and my feelings go away instantly too, what does that prove?

  • lol at the fact that he is able to speak in tongues ON DEMAND. Definitly shows that its not some divinely sent word and its just a guy makin up sounds to put himself in a trance

  • This is exactly the opposite of what happened on Pentecost. According to the bible, what was amazing then was that *everyone* understood what the apostles were saying. Here *no one* understands what is said. Then, later on, when Paul discusses something more like glossolalia, he says not to do it unless there is someone there to interpret it. In both cases meaning is important.

  • Interesting that the phonology is the same as English; that is, it has the same sounds. Where are the velar fricatives? Where are the clicks? The umlauted o and u? The nasalized vowels? Why isn't it tonal? Clearly they're just making English noises.
