Lesson 17: Present forms of the verb BE (am, is, are)
Natasha and I also begin to look at subject pronouns.

These are REAL lessons. No actors. No scripts. A real learning experience.

Do you know a friend or family member who needs to learn English? Tell them they can learn along with Natasha as I teach her the basics of the English language.

I will not be posting captions (subtitles) on these early lessons. I want beginners to develop their listening skills. I will write all important information on the board. Happy Studies to all!

  • Dear teacher Jennifer Angelina Jolie is an actress, it would be better or you can also say as you're saying here Angelina jolie is an actor, it sounds strange to me anyway you're my favorite teacher in the world

  • @wonderfulboy24

Yes, you can call Angelina Jolie an actress. However, this topic is sometimes hotly debated. Some female actors do not like to be called "actresses." They prefer one name for everyone: actor. In the context of film and TV awards, they make the distinction for Best Actor and Best Actress. In other contexts, it can be a personal preference. I chose "actor" to keep things simple, and because I don't wish to offend film artists I admire.

(continued) You can do a search for "Whoopi Goldberg actor quote," and you'll see some of the debate. Growing up, I always used "actor" and "actress." It's only as an adult I became sensitive to the discussion over titles. Thanks for raising this point. :)

  • By the way, I think you guys are doing a great job. Keep rocking! :)

  • @kakosuranosx

We're happy that even upper level students are following our progress in this series of videos. Thank you for the support.

  • Natasha, Vi molodec! Cherez neskolko mesacev Vi budete horosho razgovarivat.

Jennifer this is a great idea to teach English grammar with Natasha. I'm going to share your videos and I hope some months later you’ll show how Natasha's English skills have improved.

  • @MyEnglishTeacherVIP

Thank you for the support! I know I do most of the talking right now on camera, but I'm happy that Natasha is already putting together sentences. Also, when I arrive and when I leave, Natasha is comfortable saying hello and good-bye now. :) I hope to promote more conversation as the weeks go by.

  • I'll address articles in a separate lesson. For now, know that "a" is general and "the" is specific. Obama is a leader. (There are others who are leaders.) He's serves as a president.(There are others who are presidents of their countries.) He's the president of the U.S. =

In this lesson, Natasha and I knew which country we were talking about. The context was specific and known to us both.
