A passenger on an international flight bound for the United States Friday ignited a small explosive device shortly before landing in a move the White House called an attempted terrorist attack, a senior administration official said.Another passenger on the Northwest flight from Amsterdam, Netherlands, to Detroit, Michigan, quickly helped subdue and isolate the young male suspect with the help of cabin crew, passenger Syed Jafry said.The Northwest passenger, identified as a Nigerian national "claiming to have extremist affiliation," was placed in custody and is being treated for burns suffered in the explosion, according to a federal government bulletin obtained by CNN from a source familiar with the investigation.The explosive device "was acquired in Yemen along with instructions as to when it should be used," the bulletin said.The FBI is investigating, bureau spokeswoman Sandra Berchtold said.President Obama, who is spending the holidays in his home state of Hawaii, was briefed on the incident during a secure phone call with aides and instructed in a subsequent discussion with security advisers "that all appropriate measures be taken to increase security for air travel," White House spokesman Bill Burton said. The president made no changes to his schedule, Burton said.
One woman told CNN affiliate WDIV that a man threw a blanket over the suspect's legs to help put out the small fire."It was terrifying," Richelle Keepman said. "I think we all thought we weren't going to land, we weren't going to make it."Passenger Elias Fawaz told WDIV that the explosion sounded "like a balloon being popped" and said he could smell smoke.WDIV coverage of plane incident. One person was taken to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, hospital spokeswoman Tracy Justice said.The Northwest plane, an Airbus 330, landed shortly before noon ET. It was carrying 278 passengers.
The suspected attacker was overpowered while trying to light an explosive device on board a flight from the Netherlands as it was making its approach to land.

Airline officials described the explosives as resembling firecrackers. The Northwest Airlines flight, operated by Delta, was flying from Amsterdam's Schiphol airport. It made a safe landing and all 278 passengers were vacated to safety.

The alleged assailant was taken into custody by US authorities, who said he had confessed to attempting to carry out a terrorist attack on behalf of al-Qaeda. One senior US official described the suspect as a 23-year-old Nigerian.

Obama orders tighter security

He has allegedly told investigators that he acquired the explosive in Yemen, along with instructions on how to use them.

Dutch officials said the man was not a resident or a national of the Netherlands, and boarded Northwest Airlines Flight 253 after arriving on a connecting flight.

The White House said President Barack Obama, who is currently on holidays, convened a conference call with his national security team and ordered tighter security for air travel.

Passengers described hearing a popping noise and then seeing a small fire erupt. Yelling and screaming ensued and some witnesses said they saw the suspect sustain burn injuries.
