I found one just like this, but in better shape. I know a place with a tester, and found out two tubes were bad. I got those replaced, changed out the paper caps, and now it works even better. I'm also going to replace some resistors that drifted off.

That United tube looks like a throw off brand of a GE. The box design is almost exactly the same.

Good deal! Tips:get some spaghetti insulation to put on the bare wires when you add new caps. As you see, they can short on something.
Replace that Bumblebee cap, black w/stripes. Always bad. Contact cleaner/lube on bandswitch.Lube tuning cap. Try to never adjust the FM unless it has been adjusted before. They can get out of whack (tech term) easily.Older FM sets need a good antenna, less sensitive. Did u ever get a signal generator? I do same to protect speaker.
Take care, GRabbitt

Thank you! yes I will apply all those tips you mentioned, I did have to adjust the FM because the dial was way out of whack^^ but after a little fiddling around I got it back on almost perfect. I used some threadlock to keep the adjustments from moving again. I still haven't gotten a signal generator, but an isolation transformer is the first thing on my list. (And the bumblebee cap is now replaced) ^^

Great job getting it going! Hey if you can give me the last sets of numbers off the old E-cap, I can tell you how old is it! Thanx and Merry Christmas!
