The event was kicked off with a ceremony in the lobby of Toronto Police headquarters, where Mayor David Miller unveiled the official proclamation declaring January as Crime Stoppers Month.
This event was particularly special because it marks the 25th anniversary of Crime Stoppers
in Toronto.
Various Crime Stoppers programs in more than 20 countries around the world also marked the launch of Crime Stoppers Month by unveiling proclamations, holding special flag−raising ceremonies or making presentations to municipal councils.
Crime Stoppers Month was officially designated by Crime Stoppers International in Edmonton, Alberta in 1986 and, since that time, has been recognized by world leaders, including President George Bush and Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
The Toronto Crime Stoppers program was extremely successful in 2008. Detective Larry Straver, the co−ordinator of the Toronto program, said, Once again, there were a record number of tips in Toronto which translates into people helping each other.
Prime Minister Harper acknowledged Crime Stoppers Month in a letter and said it is with great pleasure that I extend my warmest greetings to everyone marking Crime Stoppers Month in Canada.
This years theme: Helping to Stop, Solve and Prevent Crime Together highlights the importance of the organizations partnership with police, the local media, and alert individuals within the community who provide information that helps bring criminals to justice.
Premier Dalton McGuinty also extended warm greeting to everyone marking Crime Stoppers month.
McGuinty made reference to how Crime Stoppers has played a pivotal role in ensuring the safety of local communities. My colleagues and I commend Crime Stoppers for its many vital contributions to building safe, healthy and vibrant communities from encouraging co−operative efforts between the police, the media and the public to raising awareness about crime prevention.
Chief William Blair said, I thank all the members of the Toronto Crime Stoppers Program as well as the members of the community who have had the courage to speak up, and get involved, to help keep Toronto one of the safest and most liveable cities.
Toronto Crime Stoppers received a record number of tips in 2008 with 8,697, up from 7,555 in the previous year. Those tips were responsible for solving more than 718 cases, the arrests of 649 individuals, the recovery of over $7 million in stolen property, and the seizure of over $223 million in illegal drugs.
The Toronto Crime Stoppers program was amongst the leaders in the world, having received five Provincial and 8 International Productivity and Media awards and, for the first time, the International Crime Stoppers Student of the Year, Kedre Browne.
