You can also temporarily solve the problem by disabling the "Auto-dim before sleep" feature under System Preferences>Energy/Power Settings>Options

Ok So here's the deal, I'm a computer technician and have had to deal with this issue recently. On the bottom of your macbook, check to see if there is a hair-line fracture in the casing of the laptop near the bottom where the LCD meets the main body. If there is, you have damaged the power inverter of the LCD screen and it needs to be replaced. Its a $25 part + labor, but free if still under warranty. Good luck!
