Jennifer Jones is the lady of the title, Montgomery Clift the second protagonist in this story set at the then new railway station in Rome, Italy. Directed by Vittorio de Sica, this version reached american cinemas in 1954, heavily butchered by Jones' hubby David O. Selznick. The director released a different, longer version in Europe, called Roma, Stazione Termini, which is available on DVD by Criterion. American Wife, however, is in the Public Domain.

  • geez, thanks so much. this film used to be rerun for many many times on Hong Kong late television. seeing it here brings me back the fond memories (no more old foreign movies on late television now)

  • @SugarKatie Glad you like it! Thanks for taking the time to comment!

  • I have a question.

I'm borrowing the Criterion release of this movie and it also includes the longer version.

Do you recommend I watch the shorter version, then the longer version? Of jus the longer version.

  • Hi! Hope my answer is not too late...I've watched both versions (several times by now), but I own the longer version dubbed in german only. That's the one I've seen first on TV years ago. As a film, I think that's the better choice, but I did enjoy both. Maybe you watch the longer version now and return to my page in half a year or so to see the shorter one? Anyway, enjoy!

  • Thank you all for taking the time to comment! Indeed a beautiful film!

  • Thank you!!!!! this is fab!!!

I've never seen this before and I love Montgomery in anything!

  • It's hard to stop thinking of Jennifer Jones as St. Bernadette.

  • THANK YOU FOR THIS. MONTYS SO REAL, HE DOESNT EVEN HAVE TO TRY. IT COMES SO NATURAL. CHECK HIM OUT ON JUDGEMENT AT NUREMBERG. COOLER THAN DEAN EVEN.

  • @ItBeStephx3 They're both interesting to watch. The film is certainly not perfect but has some ell done and interesting elements to it. "Indiscretions of an American Wife" is the US release and is done more like a Hollywood film, while "Terminal Station" is the European version and has a lot more of that European feel to it. I prefer the European version simply because it doesn't have the silly musical number at the beginning, thoug it does have a lot of Italians singing for no apparant reason!
