El Monasterio es el cenobio cisterciense femenino más importante que el Císter levantó en España. Fundado en 1187 por el rey castellano Alfonso VIII (1155-1214) y su esposa doña Leonor de Plantagenet.

Is the painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary protecting the royals and the nuns from the arrows of the devil from Las Huelgas? The pictures of the nunnery are much appreciated!

@SquirrelMusical Yes, this is a XV century painting that belonged to the monastery, but today is not whether there is or not. The work is of a Hispano-Flemish painter: Diego de La Cruz.

It represents the Virgin of Misercordia and family of the Catholic Kings in 1485.

I'm currentely writing a dissertation of the motets of the Las Huelgas manuscript and how they relate to their Parisian male-dominated concordance which focuses on Marian devotion being at the heart of the abbey and its music. The pictures of the abbey are incredible. Thank you once again for the music and the images.
