In this Biotechnology Project Idea, the Science Buddies Summer Science Fellows demonstrate how to construct your own gel electrophoresis chamber, the technology behind DNA analysis, and use it to compare molecules in different colors of food coloring dye. You can see the full science experimental procedure for this science fair project idea—and do it yourself!—in 'Forensic Science: Building Your Own Tool for Identifying DNA' project idea at Science Buddies. This includes details on construction, variables, and data collection as well as guidelines on developing the experiment into a full science fair project. Science Buddies also hosts a library of over 1000 other free science fair project ideas.

  • do u really need a agrose powder?

  • @khalreen You do need agarose powder for this Project Idea. However, it does not necessarily have to be biotechnology-grade agarose. Food-grade agarose, available in some natural food stores, can be used.

  • what the styrofoam for u didnt us it in the experiment

  • @2020snowsurfer The styrofoam is used to make the comb for creating wells in your gel. This is described in Step 5 of the Building the Gel Electrophoresis Chamber section of the project.

  • also what would be the testable question and hypothesis

  • @kiki1234567891234567 For help with questions and hypothesis statements, you may want to review the Science Buddies resources in the Project Guides. You can also get input from our Experts in the free Ask an Expert forums.

  • can i use paper clips other than steel wires?

  • I just really love the last 10 seconds of this video...

  • Does agar powder also work for this?

  • This is so cool. Reminds me of myth busters, but with actual scientific thought.

  • @khalreen Yes, you do. My partner and I tried doing this project, twice, with a nutrient agar ( which is a gel) and our agar/baking soda mixture didn't gel.
