patriotism is as stupid as racism, sexism, classism, fascism, or any other "ism" that splits humanity into particular privileged groups.

it's a romantic ancient concept kept alive to gain control of the masses. patriotism isn't the love you feel for your native country, but an evil institution.

@Graymoths No, that's not what it means. You can love your own country and not hate the others. There are things I think other countries have done better than the U.S., even.

It's a false dichotomy to assume you can only love one thing but hate all the others. Are all men who are in love with their wives misogynists? I highly doubt it.

@AreThereNoMoreNames Loving your own country means you don't look at other countries equally. It means seeing your own country in a positive light and that same light is not shed on other countries. This is a pattern found in racism, sexism, ageism and just about any type of discrimination out there.

That's not right at all. Patriotism is a love for your country, it's history and content. Not a hate for all others. That's something else, entirely, often hidden behind patriotism.

@TheHappyPirates how complex? please explain it to me. it doesn't matter where you are born, you are always taught to love a stupid piece of land within some politicaly stablished borders. without a specific context, "freedom" is just another word in the dictionary.

@hiruc Patriotism is the love of your freedoms and ideals and is used most during times of great terror, in an attempt to spread the good or bad ideals of a country. Patriotism gives people a reason to fight against oppression and if patriotism weren't embraced, the freedoms and pursuit of happiness of the United States would not be protected. Because patriotism can't properly be stated as bluntly as this animation does. It is much more complex and is the reason that people can live happily.

This video is obviously *not* about patriotism, rather, it's an agreeable statement (imho) about Empire. Patriotism or Nationalism aren't defined in the video. It's a simplistic attack by a frustrated teenage mind against what it sees as the cause of all the world's frustrations, including a weirdly comforting idea that some outside force is what makes everyone so miserable.

I love the country I was born in and the country of my mother. Luckily, they are virtually the same country, in terms of custom, habitat, common plastic arts, language, driving rules, shores, sports, TV, movie actors and social mores.

I would defend either country against invasion, to the death.
