Swimming with dolphins Azores Portugal. The Azores is a Portuguese archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, about 1,500 km from Lisbon and about 3,900 km from the east coast of North America. The Monchique Islet on Flores Island, located at 31° 16' 24" W is regarded as the westernmost point in Europe, even though from a geological standpoint the two westernmost Azorean islands (Flores and Corvo) actually lie on the North American plate. The current Azores' main industries are tourism, cattle raising for milk and meat, and fishing.

Bathed in the warm waters of the Gulf stream the islands unique landscape, nature and rich marine life are tightly connected to their origin and geographic location.

For all those seeking close encounters with whales, swims with dolphins, great adventures, scuba diving and fun snorkelling the incredibly abundant marine life of the Acores will not disappoint.

Dolphins are marine mammals that are closely related to whales and porpoises. There are almost forty species of dolphin in seventeen genera. They vary in size from 1.2 m and 40 kg (Maui's Dolphin), up to 9.5 m and 10 tonnes (the Orca or Killer Whale). They are found worldwide, mostly in the shallower seas of the continental shelves, and are carnivores, mostly eating fish and squid. The family Delphinidae is the largest in the Cetacean order, and relatively recent: dolphins evolved about ten million years ago, during the Miocene. Dolphins are among the most intelligent animals and their often friendly appearance and seemingly playful attitude have made them popular in human culture.

  • Great video very well done. The only problem is the way the person jumped into the water to swim with the dolphins. The guide should have informed clients of the guidelines to swimming with the dolphins, including sliding quietly into the water.

  • What's the name of the song?

  • Do you actually have to go with those typical companies or are the dolphins near the shore like you can just swim with them in Hawaii for example? Thanks
