Heartbeat [A Jemi Story] Chapter 49

(ONE YEAR LATER - JOE'S POV)

Today marks the 4 year anniversary of our marriage. I held the papers in my hand, one sweep of the pen across the page and she was no longer my wife. I had delayed the arrival of these papers a whole year, and she wouldn't have it any longer. I knew deep down she wanted us to be together still. I hated living in this apartment, this...bachelor pad, if you will. I hated it. I hated only seeing my daughter on the weekends. I hated being separate from my wife. The divorce wasn't final, I could still make her back out. But how? What could I possibly do or say. Selena told me that she has tried countless times to talk Demi out of divorcing me. Sel says that Demi is still mourning over Miley and she feels Sel was Miley's replacement, she thinks that Demi believes Camilla was her replacement. I haven't seen Camilla since the day before Demi woke. Demi knows that I love her, not Camilla...why can't she just forgive me? She knows how sorry I am and she knows I'm still madly in love with her. I glanced at the clock above the fridge and got up to leave. I had to go over to Demi's to pick of Rose for the weekend. It was only Friday morning and I usually pick her up Friday afternoons but Demi said she had something to do. I pulled into the driveway, the driveway that use to be ours, ten minutes later and made my way to the door. I gave her everything...the house..Furniture. She deserves everything. It was wrong of me to be with another woman while she was in comatose when I knew damn well in my heart that she would wake up someday. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Beautiful, that was Demi as she pulled the door open. She wore only huge sweats and a white sports bra; 5 year old Rose was on her hip.

Rose: Daddy! *holds her arms out for Joe*
Joe: Hello my little angel. *takes her in his arms and looks at Demi, trying not to stare at her bare stomach.* Hey Dems.
Demi: Hey, sorry you have to come early I know you have work and everything but I have something going on.
Joe: Oh, do you have to go in?

Demi was the manager of a restaurant, she made decent money but she deserves more for everything she does.

Demi: Uh..no. I have a lunch to go to.
Joe: A date?
Rose: Mommy is eating with Tony. He drives a yellow car.
Joe: Oh does he?
Rose: *nods repeatedly*
Demi: It's not a date.
Joe: Sure, it isn't. *walks into the house* Rosey why don't you go upstairs and pack your swimsuit, we'll go to the water park tomorrow.
Rose: Yay! I'll find my goggles!
Joe: *laughs lightly*Okay, sweetie.
Rose: *runs upstairs*
Demi: Did you bring them?
Joe: What? (I knew exactly what she was talking about)
Demi: The divorce papers.
Joe: No.
Demi: Well, why not?
Joe: Because I didn't know you wanted me to.
Demi: You and I both know that isn't true.
Joe: You look beautiful.
Demi: Stop it, Joe.
Joe: I'm just saying.
Demi: If you don't sign the papers then i'll have to..to...
Joe: To what? Take my daughter away from me? She's all I have left, if you do that then I won't be able to survive, I already lost you.
Demi: I don't know! And don't you dare threaten me and make me feel bad for this, Joe! You didn't lose me, you let me go.
Joe: I begged you; I literally went on my knees and begged for forgiveness.
Demi: You shouldn't have had a reason to beg for my forgiveness for anything in the first place, Joe.
Joe: (I could feel tears stinging my eyes) STOP IT.
Demi: What?
Joe: STOP CALLING ME JOE.
Demi: Why, Joe?
Joe: (Now I knew the droplets were falling slowly from the corners of my eyes) You know why, Demetria...the girl I loved would never call me that to my face, that's just how you were. You called me JOSEPH remember? Do you remember anything at all from when we were happy?!
Demi: *looks down*I don't want to.
Joe: WHY?! We can still be happy!
Demi: *looks up at him with tears in her eyes*
Joe: I know you still love me. I know you're still IN love with me. Go ahead, tell me i'm wrong. Tell me you're not in love with me.
Demi: I..
