Amanda Palmer first does stand-up (sit-down) about what inspired this song. It's great! Only one other version of this song exists on YouTube, and this one is more complete. Jan. 13, 2008, @ the Norva, Norfolk, Va.

  • been vegetarian for 5 years now. best.choice.ever

  • Also- don't ever go to Poetry Texas.

    They have gravel roads

    Trust me on this

  • damn i was hoping for the jeep song!

  • @kiek I don't agree. But it's a personal choice & I'm no preacher. I'm glad that some people at least realize that supporting factory farming by buying/eating the sick stuff that they produce is a big mistake.

  • meat is the only kind of murder that is tasty.

but don't think i'm mean or anything. you can buy a lot of meat from animals that have actually had a good life, and that's the kind of meat that tastes the best^^

  • Man. I always thought this song was about genocide.

Then I started thinking it was about cruelty in the meat industry. Especially the last verse (goodbye, olive sky / I am crying all the time / there there, don't despair / we will find your sheep somewhere) -- I thought it may have been about how calves used for veal were taken away from their mothers so soon, and how traumatizing that is for them. I cried a lot. Then I heard Meat is Murder and became a vegetarian.

    O story of my life.

  • yep it is. i like it too. :)

  • was this from before amanda had the vocal surgery? her voice sounds lovely as usual, but a little scratchy

  • when i first bought no virginia, i thought she was saying "if they cum when they die then they taste better". ooh, risque. of course i feel kind of sheepish (pardon the pun) now, looking back on it.
