SS St. Louis Part 1/2

SS St. Louis, the ship that no one wanted, left Germany in 1939, filled with German-Jewish families fleeing persecution. They had purchased Cuban entry visas, but when they arrived in Havana, they were not allowed to disembark. For eight days, Cubans raised money for them, but it was never enough. Running low on food and water, the ship set out for Miami. They sent telegrams to President Roosevelt and then to Mrs. Roosevelt, asking her to at least let the children come ashore. Neither answered their pleas. Two miles from Miami Beach, the ship was driven back to sea by the US Coast Guard. St. Louis Survivors gathered in Miami Beach for the 70th reunion in December, 2009.
