The reason I made this video was to help test out a new alto sax mouthpiece I found - an Ernst Schreiber Classic. I heard a friend play one and he had a truly unique and beautiful tone on it. But it was difficult for me to compare its sound to other mouthpieces I had because of the time it took to setup and switch between them, so I recorded each mouthpiece using a small Zoom H4N recorder and then spliced out the setup time between them so that each mouthpiece could be heard immediately after the other. With headphones, I could hear big differences. I tried to keep the conditions the same with each mouthpiece, ie, same reed, same ligature, etc. Also, it may sound a little stark since no audio effects were added, ie, no reverb, no EQ, no pitch correction (obviously!). Any comments, especially about these mouthpieces, are most welcome. Thanks for listening!

  • I thought your sound was best on the Dukoff D10, but the ESM Classic had lots of colours in the sound. For what you're playing (if this is your main style of music to play) then definitely keep the Dukoff.

I'd be interested to hear you play the same pieces with the same tip opening though, doesn't the D10 have a significantly wider tip opening than a link 7* for example? That could be giving a big difference as well. I assume you're using the same reed for all of these?

  • @SaxDude1995 Thanks very much for listening and for sharing your opinions. Yes, the same reed (a Fibracell 3.5 med-hard ) was used on each mouthpiece.

  • Dukoff !! Sexy colour. Low register is bright and easy , and that upper register and altissimo. Man !! But it is metal , and other mouthpieces are rubber.

  • Thank you all for taking the time to comment -- hearing your thoughts is very helpful to me!

  • I liked the Beechler. She has a very honest tone. The Dukoff is always very bright and has a unique timbre. Boquila play with an otto link 7 * and a mass of steel Otto Link 7 *. Great APPRAISAL. Thank you.

Gostei da Beechler. Ela tem um timbre muito honesto. A Dukoff é sempre muito brilhante e tem um timbre único. Toco com uma boquila otto link 7* de massa e uma Otto link de aço 7*. Ótima avalição. Obrigado.

  • What reeds/strength are you using?

  • I like the schreiber the best!

  • 0:40 4:28 ESM Classic 8, 1:30 5:07 Beechler L6S, 2:33 5:44 Otto Link 7*, 3:24 6:14 Bobby Dukoff D10 thumbs up or add to the description so we can just click and compare!

  • great playing!

  • what reed?

  • That Dukoff has some Jackie McLean hiding in it. It can do smooth jazz too, but on some of those phrases it recalls Jackie
