Kelly as the Fisherman - High Cs

William Tell is the most noble testament to freedom this side of Fidelio. Here in the first scene the Fisherman gondolas (is that a verb?)in singing his simple sunny song. Tell muses on political oppression.

This is perhaps the most challenging tenor comprimario part in opera. The fisherman comes in cold and sings a bunch of high Cs. He then essentially disappears. This is another reason why Tell is so seldom mounted. Not only is Arnold, the lead tenor, impossibly difficult so too is this brief comprimario role.

Very pleasing video. The tenor has a bright, clear, clean voice and seems to sing without obvious effort, not unlike Pavarotti when young. I want to hear more by Paul Kelly, who, heretofore, was unknown to me. FIVE STARS!

After this Kelly had a bigger career singing a lot of lead roles. He is also heard on the Rossini Three Tenor CD with Bruce Ford and William Matteuzui.

I'm going to post some other Fishermen videos today. These guys are really obscure.

Perhaps, but this isn't the part of Arnold. This is the secondary part of the Fisherman. I doubt if Gedda ever sang this small part. I will post a couple other Fisherman videos.
