LEGO Robotics League teams of St. Michael Catholic School, Garden City, test robots for a public demonstration at Surfside Public Library, with more than a 15 attending, Tuesday, Feb 9, as part of a Catholic Schools Week. It is one of two Grand Strand schools in unique LEGO League Robotics, which is a cross between an athletic tourney and a monster truck rally, says Kyle Myers, robotics coordinator. This associate pastor of St. Michael Catholic Church gained fame last year on the FOX TV show PokerStars Million Dollar Challenge, earning $100,000 for the church's building fund. The official program is called FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and was founded by Dean Kamen in 1989. 21 students in the 4th to 8th grade at St. Michael will be in the state finals Sat., March 6, 2010, at Clemson University, SC. Music under the direction of Bill Long is by the Jazz Big Band of Newberry College, SC, who played Feb. 9, 2010, in nearby Garden City, SC, at Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church.
