Vickie White was a friend, a sister, a freedom fighter, a leader, and an indefatigable champion of social, racial, economic and environmental justice and human rights. She was much beloved by her family, friends, and community.
She left us on July 1, 2009. One friend characterized her loss as a tear in the fabric of our lives. Another said God needs freedom fighters in heaven. Vickie was called, and she answered. That sounds right. She always answered the call. Our world is torn, we will miss her presence, but each of us carries her warrior spirit within us. We will continue her work in the world.

I attended the first big People's conference in January 2007, and as I was leaving, I said to Vickie, "Thanks for organizing this." And what I would like to say to her now, is, "Vickie, thank you for organizing." That was what she did best, partly by hard work and partly by being a kind and welcoming woman. That's what made her such an excellent organizer. Carrying on the struggle is the best way to honor her memory.

Thank you for sharing Vickie's voice, letting it still echo loudly both to console and remind us of her tremendous significance to her world and all the people she touched with her endless compassion and the change she brought with her strength and heart. She made us all better people, even if her own example was incomparable. She challenged us to be the best we could be. That challenge and her example is a great, great loss to all, even as her legacy remains stil to light a path forward.
