Mediterranean Itinerary X. Egypt, Rakota, Ραχώτις, Rachotis, Alexandria, اسكندريه, Αλεξάνδρεια η κατ' Αίγυπτον
After Turkey, Syria, Cyprus, Lebanon, and Palestine, our Mediterranean itinerary takes us to Egypt. In the present -- second - video dedicated to Egypt, we will visit selected locations in the legendary, 30 km long city of Alexandria. The western part of the city had been inhabited before Alexander's arrival in Egypt; its Ancient Egyptian name Rakout is at the origin of the Coptic name of the city: Rakota. The Greeks named this district Rachotis.
Alexandria became a city -- fascination for many Greeks in different times. More recently, during WW II, many Greeks sailed to Alexandria to escape the German Occupation. This reality should therefore be reflected on our musical choices.
The present video contains three songs:
Najat (Nagat, known as Nagat as Saghira, the Younger, نجاة الصغيرة ), Ana bashek al bahr -- (I love the sea // انا بعشق البحر) We already included the recent interpretation by Mohamed Mounir in the earlier video on Egypt (/watch?v=39YZB6NA29E). Lyrics by Hany Shenouda
Rena Koumioti (Ρένα Κουμιώτη) -- Aghia Kyriaki (Άγια Κυριακή - St. Domenica) This song features the story of a boat named St. Domenica, which sailed often from the Rafena harbor of Athens to Alexandria during WW II to illegally evacuate from German-occupied Greece anti-Nazi fighters. Lyrics by Costas Virvos
Dalida (داليدا) -- Akhsan Nas ( أحسن ناس / The best people)
This song describes snapshots from many Egyptian cities, namely Sohag, Benha, Ismailiya, Mahalla, Alexandria and Shoubra -- Cairo
The pictures include amongst others Abuqir, Maamoura, Montaza, Asafra, San Stefano, Roushdy, Shatby, Raml station, Anfushi, Qaytbey castle, and several Alexandrian hotels, cafés and restaurants. More than half of the pictures belong to the vast photo - archive of Marcos (marcocassiotis), whom I thank for this extra contribution.
