Awaking upon the surface of a frozen Lake Breschia, the L'Cie are surprised to find themselves alive after their fight with the Pulse Fal'Cie. Snow declares the miracle to be the work of Sera, a thought that equally reciprocated by the rest of the group. As the newly branded L'Cie exchange ideas as to what their next move should be, they are repeatedly attacked, first by a group of Cie'th, then PSICOM troops.

During their venture, they eventually find Sera, whom has been jointly crystallized into the Lake's infrastructure. When attempting to free her, they are again ambushed by hostile forces, this time however being the death machine that Lightning and Sazh initially defeated earlier in the game.

Though once again successful in their fight, the group remains disunited in how to move forward. Snow decides to stay behind and continue freeing Sera from her crystal chains while Lightning and the others proceed forward.

Lightning and the others come upon a temple ruins, but soon encounter a large flying enemy monster and are forced to engage in battle. After its defeat, the group discover an abandoned airship, which they plan to use to escape the area.

Meanwhile, Snow's efforts to free Sera are interrupted when he is attacked by a sect of the Guardian Core who have come to apprehend him. He battles valiantly but comes close to defeat when his L'Cie powers awaken: the Shiva twins arrive to save him, but not before he passes their test of trials.

Back on the airship, Lightning and the others immediately come under fire from enemy ships, and struggle to escape from the area. They are eventually hit by an enemy salvo, causing their ship to lose control and fall downward toward the Vile Peaks below.
