When I was young I had a recording of an American singer, Nelson Eddy, singing this. He was a high baritone, sang in several musical movies with Jeanette MacDonald but ended up being an entertainer just as Jose Carreras is doing now rather than singing opera. Nelson Eddy died on stage while singing, or soon after. The arrangement that JC is singing here is great but very different to the NE one so I don't think they can be compared. As for Jose Carreras I have loved his voice from 1st hearing.
