@BaboonLoveMonkey not really since during this time period many people were building shelters. however even now there is still a possibiltiy of nuclear war. better prepared that not eh. see im the guy that lives. your the person who dies in the 500mph winds and firestorm ^^

I think the worst bit of this film for me is when the Kemps are sitting in the smoking and burning ruins of their home, suffering from burns and radiation sickness, and listening to their neighbours cry out for help and, in the following scenes, these cries cease.

Right. But Nuclear Winter would block out the sun and cause a lot of deaths later.
I read that the USSRs Army and Air Force were no where as NEAR as good as some thought. Look at Afghanistan and Chechnya. Their conscript troops were poorly trained and motivated.
