  • I believe it was first come first served, but I'd check with the National Park to be sure. Campsites are primitive. Flow was at 6000 cfs I believe-high! A dozen fish or more per day. I was 42 years old at the time, in good shape and it took me 2 hrs to get out. The hike out wasn't as bad as the sore legs after the hike down.

  • I believe it's designated Gold Medal waters, so no keeping fish, all catch and release.

  • Is that the Warner trail down?

  • No, that's the Gunnison Route. The easiest trail. Still not for the faint of heart or those out of shape. Apparently the Warner Route is the most difficult access with 900' more vertical and a lot more exposed and hotter. My fishing buddies say there is more fishing access at the bottom of the Warner Route, but there was plenty of room at the bottom of the Gunnison Route with the flows as high as they were.

  • man it looks like you had a blast. my cousin lives a few hours away from there and we're going to try and make a run out there some time. looks like it's chock full of browns. that was nice footage of the scenery. now i know what to expect if we camp by the river. it looks like you had your food hanging over the river... are there bears around there?

  • yes, bears! also aggressive ground squirrels which required the hanging of food. apparently lots of browns in that section of the canyon and more rainbows further down stream.

  • Saw you posted this in June, is this when you fished it as well?

  • Your a stud! Awsome location. Been there every year since 1993 just to fish SW colorado and the gunnison is the king. We go down the SOB. First trip I was 19, now Im 37. I dont expect it will ever get old, though I might.

  • clroot1 how does the camping work at the bottom of the canyon, first come first serve? Are there campsites set up? What flow was the river at? How many fish would you say you caught in a day? for a reasonably fit mid 30's guy how long does it take to hike out of the canyon on that route. Beautiful trip and nice footage!! Thanks for sharing

  • can you keep any fish on that stretch?

  • Jim Beam is... *burns going down the throat* pure nectar! LOL

  • I tear it up on rainbow rappalas, I usually go towards morrow point or the bottom of crystal dam.

  • yeah it is and thats not a ranger station thats a house i used to live in
