From Advancing Girls in STEM: An NCGS Symposium held at Wellesley College on June 21, 2011. A keynote conversation featuring Bernice Sandler and Ruth Bramson. Moderated by Jennifer Ouellette.

Ruth N. Bramson, Chief Executive Officer of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachuses, and Bernice Sandler, Senior Scholar at the Women's Research and Education Institute, will discuss the stereotypes and other subtleties that impact girls' and women's involvement in STEM fields. Author Jennifer Ouellee will moderate this important conversation. Sandler, considered the "Godmother of Title IX," and author of The Chilly Classroom Climate: A Guide to Improve the Education of Women, will examine if the chilly climate for girls in STEM has thawed, focusing on how subtle and oen unnoticed behaviors from men and women alike, from faculty members and families, and from fellow students can affect girls' and young women's perceptions of themselves, lower their academic and vocational aspirations and lessen the chances of their entering or even considering STEM occupations or fields as possibilities. Bramson draws from her experience leading the Massachusetts Governor's STEM Advisory Council's work on closing the gap for women and underserved minorities in STEM fields, as well as the initiatives Girl Scouts has found successful, partnering with other organizations and educators, to excite and encourage girls from a young age in STEM. This experience lends itself to Bramson's focus on how the STEM achievement gap can be closed through innovative afterschool programs, public/private partnerships, and role models for girls.
