The Central Idea of the Text is that The Lord renewed His covenant with Israel; summarizing a few of the major responsibilities they were to keep (Ex. 34:10-17, 27).

Moses worshipped in response to the revelation of God's character (Ex. 34:5-8). Moses then advocated again for Israel (not hiding their sin), that God would accept them and go in their midst, and God agreed (Ex. 34:9-10). Not all cultural values are godly or good; therefore, God was seeking the best interest of His people when He commanded them to avoid human relationships that exclude Him (Ex. 34:11-17; cf. 2 Cor. 6:14-15). By observing holy days and the Sabbath, Israel would remember God's deliverance from slavery and give thanks for their new life of prosperity (Ex. 34:18, 21-26). Through dedication and redemption, Israel would be reminded that God owns all life (Ex. 34:19-20). Finally, God's glory was reflected in Moses because of the time he spent with Him (Ex. 34:29-30; cf. 2 Cor. 3:18), and this authenticated Moses as Israel's spiritual leader who sought to direct them into God's will (Ex. 34:31-35).

Christians are in a relationship with God by means of the New Covenant, and we celebrate the Lord's Supper as an ongoing memorial of what Jesus accomplished on our behalf when He took upon Himself humanity and shed His blood on the cross for the forgiveness of sins (Luke 22:19-20). More so, our covenant relationship with God requires us to walk in holiness and obedience to the Lord, living a sacrificial life for His glory and the edification of others (Eph. 1:4; 1 Pet. 1:15-16; Phil. 2:3-4).
