@emaleerosee They're wrong. What makes you a martial artist is a commitment to learning methods of fighting, nothing more. There are subdivisions of this, whereby you get specialists in competition, self defence or martial traditions, but nothing about this learning requires you to respect those who haven't earned it.
I believe that many "masters" may well be lacking in some vital training for self defence, therefore demanding respect for all is attempted self preservation for themselves.

Finally I have my comments up properly. This commenting system is a problem if your typing alot.

From most of the people I have talked to, people initially goto training for self defense. I agree that training is also about personal development which is also a part of protecting yourself. Self awareness, awareness of the environment, awareness of how attackers work etc.

It strikes me that the people saying "martial arts aren't about learning to fight" are always people who train ineffectively. Martial arts by their nature were designed to teach people to fight and defend themselves, but it has been lost along the way.
@peterossy and @ninjamarky
as I can see from your disrespectful and hateful comments, neither of you know anything about TaeKwonDo or martial arts in general. The first thing you learn in martial arts is to respect others, which clearly, neither of you know how to do.

@emaleerosee Nothing about martial arts training requires you to respect what other people show as self defence. Martial arts are ultimately just about learning to fight, whether in competition, in self defence, in a duel or on the battlefield.
Respect for your training partner is necessary for safety. Respect for your instructor is necessary for learning. Respect for what other people do? Not necessary for your own training.
To summarise: respect is earned, not given automatically.

@Aegis82
Martial arts are not ultimately about learning to fight, for the people who can rightfully call themselves martial artists it is a way of life...at least, that's how it is in TKD.
I've had many Taekwondo Masters tell me throughout my life that without respect for everyone around you (which includes fellow martial artists), you are not a martial artist.
