I'm using the "el cheapo" metal skein holder I got on eBay for about 4 dollars, and a skein winder I got for about 6 to wind some yarn that cost more than both of them combined! :P
Sometimes, on every swift I've ever used, the yarn will get tangled at the bottom of the winder, or will catch on the swift and get tangled there. So, I've decided to just hold the yarn as it winds, to prevent that ever happening. I'm a slow, patient person, so I don't mind. I'm the same way when I knit too.
I usually hold the yarn while winding it with a good swift too. (I help out at my cousin's yarn store every Friday, and spend about 2 hours winding each time.) I just want to make sure the yarn is evenly wound in the ball. I'm just too particular, you know. :P

If you don't hold the yarn, does it come out uneven on the ball?

That's too bad that you had to hold the yarn while winding it.
