A visual exploration of three late summer butterflies, Charles Town, West Virginia from pictures my wife took from our flower garden. The different butterflies had been around our Zinnia's and sunflowers in front of our home on the outskirts of Charles Town.
We had recently seen a Carnegie Museum of Natural History exhibit in Pittsburghton Andrey Avinoff, a slavic lepidopterist and later director of the Carnegie who was interested in questions of the spirit that butterflies naturally suggest: transformation, metamorphosis, natural beauty.
If there are naturalists who can identify the other of the two butterflies, not the Monarch, please comment as we'd like to know more about these winged visitors.
