Joel Madden (born Joel Reuben Combs on March 11, 1979) is an American singer and the lead vocalist for the band Good Charlotte.
Joel Madden was born Joel Reuben Combs in Waldorf, Maryland to an Irish-American family.[citation needed] He has an identical twin brother, Benji Madden, who plays lead guitar in their band Good Charlotte. He also has an older brother named Josh, and a younger sister named Sarah. Madden attended La Plata High School in La Plata, Maryland.
When Madden was sixteen years old his father left the family, causing them financial hardships. Madden took up various odd jobs as a teenager to help his mother with the family's bills. One job he and his brother, Benji, took up was washing hair at a salon. While in his early twenties, Madden, along with his siblings, changed his last name from Combs, his father's last name, to his mother's maiden name, Madden. He did so to distance himself from his father.
Joel started dating Hilary Duff in 2004, when she was 16 years old and he 25. In November 2006, after two and a half years, Madden and Duff broke up.
Madden started dating Nicole Richie soon after he and Hilary Duff broke up.They have a daughter Harlow Winter Kate Richie Madden, who was born on January 11, 2008. Madden has one niece, Clementine, who was born December 20, 2007.
Joel Madden and Nicole Richie announced in February 2009 that they're expecting again, with the baby due in later August/early September. It was reported in In Touch Weekly magazine, Joel was spotted buying blue paint for the new nursery adding to speculation that the couple will be having a son.
Madden was recently asked to cover up his tattoos when boarding a flight to the UK. Madden complied but expressed his disapproval via his Twitter account.
Good Charlotte is an American band from Waldorf, Maryland that formed in 1995. They took their name from the children's book called "Good Charlotte: The Girls of Good Day Orphanage," written by Carol Beach York.
The members of the band are identical twin brothers Joel Madden (lead vocals and guitar) and Benji Madden (rhythm guitar and backing vocals); Billy Martin (lead guitar, keyboards), Paul Thomas (bass guitar) and Dean Butterworth (drums)
