In this art action over 30 local residents performed a simple and repetitive synchronised exercise and stretching regime in the carpark of a shopping centre in Schöppingen, Germany. The performers created a gitterbildung (grid formation) and exercised while watching a film with an original soundtrack on a television set that screened exercises and stretches.
This performance is about a couple of things. The most obvious is that, we all know that the world isnt quite the way it should be, and that we would like to help but that were a little busy right now, hence the title 'One day I think Ill lend a hand, but right now I need a new plasma TV'. The other part of the work, looks at our desire to fit in, and follow the trends, fashion and lifestyle that is projected to us on TV.
My artwork is generally socially based interventions performed in the urban landscape, and I look to reconnect art and life through performance. I use fashion, life between buildings, the human body and performance to create awareness, discussion and engagement of issues, through participation. My performances are based on a platform of fun and lightheartedness, which engenders positive experiences for the performers and passers-by, who become actors in the shared public space of the intervention.
