Good question. But most people forget that back in the 30s Europeans were faced with one growing and all-embracing question: does one march with the Fascists (the Ancien Regime to some extent) or go with the Marxists towards a new future. Even the British Royal family was split on the issue. We know where Catholics went - where their Pope told them to go! And at Stalingrad , it was decided. Since then, through the RCC, the fascists are back, in the US, Vietnam, the Middle East etc...

dont bring religion into it. its capitalism not relion related although to some extent you could include the wealth of the various religious establishments as they are basically multi national companys.

The CIA does not give a hoot about democracy; they give a hoot about their relations with the Vatican and the protection of the Christian mission, even when this means ratlining good Christian Nazis. Remember, the enemy is the devil -- sorry, those Communists (27 million of them) who rescued us from the Christian Nazis!

Unfortunately, the answer to that question will not be anything positive.
I watched the entirity of War on Democracy last night, and I felt enraged. the best documentary I've seen in ages, and I've seen quite a few recently.
