@cathoderoy Gabriel has also admitted that he was jealous of the success that Genesis had after he left the band. It could be that part of that jealousy may manifest itself in criticizing certain aspects of Phil's singing on the older songs. Who knows? It is clear they definitely had different styles, and that is illustrated from Willow Farm to the end of Supper's Ready. Personally, I enjoy both and listen to both.
@torquesport Get over myself? If you think it's a good idea that some cover band does what amounts to Genesis doing a pail imitation of themselves with Gabriel, you'll probably swallow any cheap knock off of the real thing that's foisted on the public and remain blissfully ignorant...good for you for being a consumer of crap and being too stupid to know it.
@raelraven2 I remember an interview w/ Gabriel about seeing Phil Collins do "Supper's Ready" in which he said it really made him uncomfortable, especially during the "Willow Farm" segment, because Peter wrote the whole thing by himself...he didn't think Phil did it very well, and he said he had a wider range than Phil, too...but, hey, what the fuck does Gabriel know, right?
@cathoderoy If you listen to Phil sing it from the '82 tour, he absolutely knocks it out of the ballpark. The fact is that while Levac in this clip sounds somewhat like Phil circa 82, his voice has neither the range nor the dramatic flair that Collins possessed back then. In fact for me as much as I Iove Peter, Phil's performance in '82 is the best rendition of Supper's Ready I have ever heard. Just my opinion.
That bad chord they hit @ about 4:30 is pretty awful...actually, the whole fucking thing makes me cringe...it's bad enough that Phil ruins the song, but the idea of having someone IMITATE how Phil fucks it up, and even exaggerate it, is so idiotic. How can people be so fucking ignorant and absolutely tasteless...if they had recorded it like this on the lp, I probably would have stopped listening to them completely, and possibly never heard "The Lamb.." record...if you think I'm wrong, fuck you!!
Very good! To sing like Phil in this song is so much more difficult than copying Peter. Phil really belted out these sections and held out certain key words in the lyrics much longer than did Peter (e.g. "below," rock-n-roll." "tune," "home," and "Jerusalem"). Hopefully Martin will decide to do these Genesis tours again.
3:27 .. Stunning!!
