Two new bee hives I had custom made for the Spring 2010. There is an 8 frame hive and a 10 frame hive. Both of these hives use 3 medium supers instead of the typical 2 deeps for the brood chamber. This is so I have optimum interchangeability as I experiment with the brood chambers this year.
@Mont556n Also notice ALL are mediums... even the brood boxes. Makes interchangeability a snap. If you have to bring some honey down or just want to swap some stuff from anywhere... all are medium. Different strokes. The only downside is that I have 3 main brood boxes to go through during inspections instead of 2, but that hasn't bothered me yet. Cheers.

@krullion I never thought of the weight. I break my back doing this every summer. Good point to bring up.

@Mont556n I hear ya, but they are nice if you are not interested in lifting 90-100 lb supers :) Experimenting with lighter beekeeping. I am very happy with the results of the 8-framers this year and will let you know after overwintering.

Little advice. (been doing this for 15 years). Waste of space to use the smaller supers, use the big boxes on top also. More honey, better production. Those new hives look pretty nice, but soon they will be full of wax and mess. Some hives I use have been used for over 50 years. Amazing what bees can do with them.
