I wish it was Scotland!

Italy won the 2006 World Cup over France in Berlin, Germany, winning on penalty kicks 5-3 after a 1-1 draw in regulation.

France opened up the scoring in 7th minute with Zinedine Zidane converting a penalty kick on Italian goalkeeper Gianlugi Buffon.

Italy would tie the game up at 1-1 in the ninteenth minute when Marco Materazzi headed in an Andrea Pirlo corner by Fabien Barthez. Italy had seemed to have taken to gone back in front in the 63rd minute with a goal from Luca Toni, however officals ruled the striker offside.

The first period of extra time saw two good chances by the French. The first by Frank Ribery went just wide of the net, while Zidane's header would be stopped in spectacular fashion by Buffon.

France would be forced to play with ten men in final ten minutes of the second period of extra time, when Zidane head-butted Materazzi, and the French captain was given a red card in what may have been his final contest.

The game went to penalty kicks where David Trezeguet hit the cross bar on France's second attempt, giving Italy a 2-1 lead. It would come down to the final kick by Fabio Grosso, and he would find the back of the net, giving Italy their fourth World Cup title and their first since 1982.

Sault Ste Marie's Italian community didn't need to be in Germany to get into World Cup spirit. A capacity crowd at the Marconi Club cheered like they were there when Italy won.

They took the celebrating to the streets waving the Italian flag and yelling Italia number one from their cars. They paraded from the Marconi Club to downtown along Queen St.
