Natural cork can contain a fungus which causes a bad odor, and spoils the wine. Wineries also report that a certain percentage of the corks they order arrive damaged and unusable. Removing a natural cork tends to cause small particles of cork to fall into the wine. Synthetic corks better, in my opinion, and are the future for wine.
