It was a great day for members of the Calgary Highlanders, that made a battlefield tour in Holland. At the end of the trip a visit to Groningen was planned. The members were welcomed in the Stefanus church in Noorddijk by the municipality in person of deputy major, Elly Pastoor and Truus Schoonhoven of the Liberation Wood, a gift of the citizens of the province of Groningen to their Canadian liberators of the Second World War.
The Calgary Highlanders celebrate their one hundred anniversary and was supported by their Pipes and Drum Band. The oldest member that made the trip was Floyd Rourke, who fought in the streets of Groningen. Also the water tower was visited from where the Germans shoot on the Canadians when the conquered the city.
Reporter Johan van Gelder from Groningen who wrote a book in Dutch that is called: De Weg van de Vrijheid (The Road of Freedom), Het pension van de Tweede Wereldoorlog, (The pension of the Second World War), 65 jaar Herinnering en Bevrijding (65 years Remembrance and Liberation), made an impression of this historical day.
