Well known Rilke poem about fulfilling one's destiny:

Rainer Maria Rilke
"sometimes a man stands up during supper
and walks outdoors, and keeps on walking,
because of a church that stands somewhere in the East.

And his children say blessings on him as if he were dead.

And another man, who remains inside his own house,
stays there, inside the dishes and in the glasses,
so that his children have to go far out into the world
toward that same church, which he forgot."
― Rainer Maria Rilke

  • Excellent Representation!

I have a couple of books by Rilke. I have really enjoyed "The Possibility of Being" & "Letters to a Young Poet".

Thanks for sharing this with us!

  • You're most welcome :)

I also love the Duino Elegies - what a poet!

  • Words, clothed with images and music enhances the meaning . I loved this poem. Each beleive what they do is right. One makes the move the other stays in our stage of LIFE.

Thank you Graham:) for sharing this creation with us.

    Blessings

    Tara

  • I've just reread this one. It is in the "Possibility of Being". Many great lines to think aout in that one, too. Some favorites: "Fling the emptiness out of your arms to broaden the spaces we breathe-maybe that the birds will feel the extended air in more fervent flight"; "And we, spectators always, everywhere, looking at , never out of , everything! It fills us. We arrange it. It collapses. We rearrange it, and collapse ourselves."; "Supernumerous existence wells up in my heart". Thanks again !
