This is part 1 of 2 for upgrading a 2006-2007 Version 1 CPU. I went form a 2ghz to a 2.66ghz and you can go up to a dual quad core 2.66 if wanted! This is actually pretty easy to do if you have the correct tools.
This is a decent T-handle set from Amazon with free shipping: http://amzn.to/h0gsKj
Try to find a non-ball tip 3mm driver for this like the set above.
The screwdriver is a autoloader: http://amzn.to/em4YTV
Great for precision work and the micro bits all stay within.
You can find CPU's on Amazon: http://amzn.to/fFeNMX but can find cheaper on eBay.

  • hey, what exact model is this Mac Pro ? - thanks !

  • @alectroniq I will try and find the model number. I do know it was the first Intel Mac Pro they released.

  • Can you put like 2x Xeon 6 core in there :)

  • @RasserRifle Nope, this model won't handle that. Only dual quad's

  • Why didn't Apple use a philips screw for the heat sinks? Just another tool we have to buy...

  • @breaksmash Apple never ment to have a end user replace the CPU's in these systems. Also you can tighten down the heat-sinks better with a Hex then a Phillips, and you wont strip as easy.

  • @SourNaik Macs use EFI rather than BIOS, and such GPU's are quite rare (much smaller market, 1 Mac can use them rather than millions of PC's). That should change though as EFI becomes more popular.

You can also flash the BIOS on many "PC" graphics cards to make them work with OSX. Most people tend to have better results with AMD cards than NVIDIA from what I've seen. Be sure you know what you're potentially getting yourself into if you intend to try this, you could end up bricking the GPU.

  • @SourNaik you can use ani graphics card as long as it says mac support

  • Not regarding CPU but Do you have to use the graphics card for mac pro sold by apple? or Can I just buy ANY ATi 5770 (looks the same as the one in this video)..Please get back to me I need a new graphics card on my Mac pro 2008 8-core!

  • @TechDripper no problem mate, i think i found it already, thanks.

  • @breaksmash It's because they don't necessarily want you to do this yourself
