@Dexterised Finger prints aren't going to make any difference by that point. If you open an HD anywhere but a clean environment, it's ruined anyway. GG

@hellerase Hard drives don't have speakers. The part of the drive that's making the sound are the voice coils between the neodymium magnets. They have a chamber between them just big enough to make audible sound. Attaching a paper cone to the arm will drastically raise the quality and volume of the sound coming out of it.

@RealGoonieKid I've run many hard drives with their tops removed and none of them failed during or after the top was put back. None of them reported more bad sectors or had head strikes either.
I don't recommend doing such drastic things unless you need to perform data recovery on the drive though.

@GGigabiteM assuming the disk is spinning 100% of the time while you have it in use :/ and bits of dust will still get on the platters.. ur "wind vortex" theory isnt fantastic.
-
@teknoguy2002 This is incorrect. You can open a hard drive and run it in open air with it still being able to function properly. Small bits of dust and hair won't cause any problems while running due to the wind vortex created by the spinning platters.
Granted, it's still not a great idea to do because of the numerous other things that can go wrong. But in those extreme data recovery situations, sometimes it's required.

@zikten I am not sure but I think HD has usually some small speakers, It`s usually doing that "TIT" when you restart for example the computer. so he wire that HD and now they are working as nomal speakers. If I am mistaken please correct me.
hahah. hook wires from the arm, to a stereo's output.
