EU Parliament approves poisoned climate deal - WWF

Strasbourg / Brussels - Today the European Parliament accepted the compromise agreement on climate change hammered out last week by EU Heads of State and Government. The deal is said to cut greenhouse gas
emissions by 20% by 2020 compared to 1990. WWF says that, far from being an example for the world, the package is poisoned by the large amount of carbon credits allowed from non-European countries instead of focusing
on actions within Europe.

This is not quite the third industrial revolution trumpeted when proposals were presented at the beginning of the year, says Delia Villagrasa, Senior Advisor to WWF. The 20% target sounds nice in words, but is void because EU countries are allowed to accomplish approximately three quarters of the effort outside EU borders, which translates into European emission reduced by only 4 to 5% between now and 2020.

GroenLinks teleurgesteld over uitkomst klimaat- en energiepakket

Straatsburg, 17 december 2009 - Het Europees Parlement stemde vandaag in meerderheid voor het klimaat- en energiepakket. GroenLinks is teleurgesteld dat Europa het leiderschap wat ze een jaar geleden beloofde niet heeft waargemaakt.

Van de zes milieuwetten die samen het klimaat- en energiepakket vormen heeft GroenLinks er drie gesteund. "De overige drie schoten serieus tekort om de Europese economie om te vormen tot een minder vervuilende", aldus GroenLinks-europarlementariër Kathalijne Buitenweg.

GroenLinks is trots op de richtlijn voor hernieuwbare energie van de groene rapporteur Claude Turmes, maar de voorstellen over emissiehandel en lastenverdeling (effort sharing) tonen serieuze gebreken.


"Europa dreigt haar leidende rol op klimaatgebied te verliezen. Als je een voortrekkersrol wil spelen en het goede voorbeeld wil geven, dan moet je het lef hebben om voor de troepen uit te lopen. Het is ook niet alsof we nog heel veel tijd hebben, want de klimaatklok tikt ondertussen gewoon verder", aldus Buitenweg.
