Depression is an all too frequent problem for mothers of children with autism.

  • Seems like a preconceived conclusion in a chicken or the egg causality dilemma;

    yet, my mother was already depressed BEFORE she conceived me, her firstborn and autistic son, having gotten herself pregnant to appease her depression.

    One thing is spot on though: autism can't be cured; autists ARE their condition*.

    * Autism is actually a spectrum of "conditions", with vast variety in how it manifests itself, making living with it highly different from case to case.

  • It's also because the parents realise their dreams for their child aren't going to be fufilled.

  • Mothers of Children with Autism Are Prone to Depression? Duh!

    Yeah, I get depressed when my autistic son has violent meltdowns, when he suffers because of his super-sensitive hearing, when he is too afraid to leave the house because there are squirrels, cats and dogs out there, when his camp says he cannot return because he hit the camp manager. I think this guy has a legitimate point!

  • Doc, maybe women with depression are more likely to have autistic children, not just the other way 'round. I had depression for decades before I had my disabled children. I am happier since having these children than I ever was before.

  • Dr? Disease? Autism is not a disease.
