This is Thor's Cave, Staffordshire, which was named after the old Norse god. Excavations have shown that the cave was occupied as long as 10,000 years ago and this occupation probably continued until Roman or Saxon times, making it one of the oldest sites of human activity in the Peak. Stone tools and the remains of a range now extinct animals were found within the cave.

Most importantly this was used in the filming of Ken Russells 'The Lair of the White Worm"

  • Thank you for giving us

the opportunity to see that cave, ukzombie.

I love Ken Russel's Lair of the WhiteWorm.

I'm just happy to discover the actual cave.

This footage could very be a valuable bonus to the DVD.

  • I can't wait for this to be released on dvd, my VHS copy is so worn and Ken Russel is a great director.

  • Very cool, just saw the movie and figured someone had been there in real life. It looks like the inside view in the movie was the real thing too!

  • Be intersting to find the other locations as well!

  • Hello Barry, it's on the Borders of Staffordshire and Derbyshire, I suppose it's depends which county your from.

  • I remember being in another, very tiny cave (you might as well call it a dirt tunnel) just a short walk away from this place (next to that pub thing, havent been there in a while, so dont start to correct me). Kinda spooky when you go in one end, and on the other side of the tunnel, there's a long drop, and if you fell, you'd land in cow poop :(

  • how cool!

I love that movie - one of my all time favs.

    thank you for posting this!

  • Okay. here are a couple of more locations, where the film was shot.

Temple House in the film is Gaddesden Place, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England. It is a private residence and is closed to the public.

D'Ampton Manor is Knebworth House, Stevenage, Hertfordshire, England. It is also a private residence, but is sometimes open to the public.

But, the one I want to know, and I have never been able to locate is, what is the location of Mercy Farm?
