Jill Bolte Taylor: STROKE of insight: TED TALKS: documentary, lecture, talk:

Jill Bolte Taylor got a research opportunity few brain scientists would wish for: She had a massive stroke, and watched as her brain functions -- motion, speech, self-awareness -- shut down one by one. An astonishing story.

Brain researcher Jill Bolte Taylor studied her own stroke as it happened -- and has become a powerful voice for brain recovery.

I had a stroke this past October. The way she explains it is dead on. It was the worse thing in the universe. My friend did not take me to the hospital because she didn't believe that i was having a stroke. However, it completely changed my entire life. To be so close to death, where you must fight for your life. Now I view the world completely different and am so thankful for my life.

(continued from previous two messages). How it is "not profitable to Big Pharma to help people" is beyond me, sir. You're talking about one of the biggest causes of stock market growth prior to the recession. On-patent antipsychotics is a huge business, and it makes those firms hugely profitable.

(continued from previous message) .. what I meant was that it is not a "physical disorder of the brain", which is what most people mean when they say "brain disorder". Physical disorders of the brain: epilepsy, blood clots, tumors, Parkinson's. For decades, scientists have been trying to tie schiz. to physical activity in the brain, but they have not succeeded and there is a good argument that they never will. Because scientists cannot agree on whether schiz. is present in a given human.

Well, of course I have no clue of the experience of what she perceives, since it is a highly abnormal experience that I haven't had myself. But what makes you think her experience is "the true reality of life." Why is my experience not "the true reality of life"? Is yours? Schiz. is treatable, not curable. If it were, there would be a financial catastrophe from big pharma losing enormous profits. The stock market would dive, etc. When I said schiz. was not a brain disorder ...

I think you missed the point of what she was saying and have no clue of the experience of what she perceives. Her way of getting to see the true reality of life is not really a way to make others follow the same tracks. What she suffered from was life-threatening yet enlightening and in no way is a propaganda towards strokes. Also schizophrenia is a brain disorder and mental illness at the same time and is actually a curable condition, but it's not profitable to Big Pharma to help people.

As for what this person is saying, I think it's propaganda. Ms. Bolte Taylor is spreading misinformation and lies to get people to accept surgical destruction of the brain, a horribly disabling procedure, sort of halfway to homocide, that is seeing a resurgence of interest due to advances in brain science. They need experimental subjects. Anyone want to try? If you don't want to, maybe you can volunteer an unpopular family member!

Beyond that, I can say that she's even got her right and left mixed up! The left frontal lobe anticipates GOOD outcomes. The right frontal lobe anticipates BAD ones. I have brain damage on the left side and I can only anticipate bad outcomes. It's like waking up in Hell, each day. I can't imagine anything worse. I wish I were dead.

more bullshit: that the left hemisphere is "about the past" and the right is "in the present". Actually, the temporal difference is more between the frontal lobes and the temporal lobes. Frontal lobes (BOTH of them, right and left) anticipate the future. Temporal lobes (BOTH sides) contain the hippocampal layers, executing what we commonly know as memory. That the left lobes say "I am" is pure fantasy. This is a philosophy -- Cartesianism -- not a brain function! Good grief.
