The voice of Quint tempts us seductively. Hear his call inviting us to the sweetness of vice « Miles! Oh Miles! » Two children lose themselves between reality and the supernatural. Four voices meld into a violent combat in order to possess them. Everything seems lost: « Innocence is drowned », childhood, assassinated.

This is an excerpt from an experimental workshop done in collaboration with the Opéra de Montréal and the SAT.

  • I believe Turn of the Screw is in itself profoundly disturbing whatever you do with it.

  • aye, Britten's rather anal, I do agree.

  • Yes he would!

But Britten was 'touchy' about his work and very defensive. He was unhappy with the original casting of 'Flora' as he wanted a child and couldn't find one. He shelved the opera until he did! It was not performed in Aldeburgh till 1961.

The Screw is 'disturbing' more for what is not said than said. One's imagination can run riot!

  • Would Britten approve of the "orchestration"? Well, in his late period he did experiment with aleatorism - which to me suggests he was quite open-minded. And so I would guess he would find this at least interesting, if not awe-inspiring.

  • Love it! Not sure Britten would go for the orchestration!

    Lucky he's dead!

  • Oh I'm inclined to agree with you there and as an enthusiast of the story, I've seen quite a few versions that take such liberties that make it even more disturbing.

  • Wow...I believe I've heard of this but not seen it in action. This is beyond disturbing the way they have this set up...and I haven't decided yet if it's a good kind of disturbing or not.
