Lost and Found
By: Sterling Hurst
It's easy for someone to sit back and look at another and advise them on what to do. It's easy to take another's hand and lead them through their hardship, to help them find the light again. But, what's difficult is to guide one's self to this salvation. To reach it on one's own is truly a test of spirit. To take one's own bittersweet words of wisdom and swallow them, it's then they turn into the most coarse of flavors. One which leaves our mouths parched. The unique thing is this; when one is a guide, when you've finished guiding those around you, you often times find yourself standing alone in the midst of that dark wood that had lost so many amongst it's twisted and gnarled paths. Here's is when one must remember the path he led the others on, he must make this journey, many times, alone. The other trips were easy; you had someone with you, even if they were afraid and unsure of themselves. Now, this guide, a savior to many, stands alone, left only with his own resolve, faith, and courage to guide himself out. But, he rests assured knowing that all those he loves, those he's helped are waiting just at the end of that labyrinth of pathways. As he walks he is tempted and beckoned by all manner of distraction. Signs showing the easy ways out, the shortcuts...but that distant light shining through the tree's, his name being called out by familiar voices is what pulls his eyes back forward. So he begins to run down these twisted paths, the ragged branches and twisted vines dawned with thorns tearing at him, trying their best to hold him back, to make his journey more difficult. All he wants is to find them again, his work here being done. Then he stumbles and falls. He falls to the ground and the branches and vines close around him, holding him down to the ground. He looks up at that distant light which now seems an impossible goal. He reaches out in vain for it, but knowing it is out of his reach. He hangs his head in defeat, tears falling from his eyes. Then a hand takes his. He looks up to find a familiar face smiling down at him. He's pulled up to his feet. As he brushes himself off he looks up to see that each of those he'd helped had taken up hands and formed a chain along the path to mark the way to that distant light, which now seems to be so much closer.
He looks to his friend whose face now comes into focus. A face he'd lost to cancer so many years ago. The next in line was the friend who'd taken that curve that rainy night too fast. The next was his grandfather who'd taken him fishing so many times down at the creek near his farm house. He walked on, the chain following after him behind. Each step greeted him with a warm and loving face. The light began to grow more and more until the tree's seemed to pull back like a curtain to reveal that place he'd guided so many to, so many times before. He looked around to those he loved, the familiar faces of both the present and past. They pulled him eagerly, wanting to show him all they had discovered in this place since they had arrived, when off in the dark wood sounded another voice, small and afraid, calling out for help, lost and alone. He looks back into the shadows that he'd just come. Then to those around him he smiled, gave them a hug and simply said, "I'll be right back."
Life is short. What get's us through is the friendships we make and the Love we share. Everyone needs help now and then, even the people who showed us the way...
